Money paid as deposit on rented accommodation will be held by a third party under new rules to protect tenants from losing their deposits at the end of their tenancy where landlords withhold, without reason, the deposit paid when a letting agreement is being signed.
The Junior Minister responsible for housing and planning, Jan O Sullivan , revealed the plan as Ireland’s leading housing charity Threshold said that some twenty thousand people contacted the organisation claiming the illegal retention of money by landlords.
This new Government initiative to improve tenants’ rights would see Ireland adopt an international standard, which is common in England, where deposits are held by an independent third party and not the landlord.
“It makes sense that we would follow suit, and introduce a similar solution in Ireland. This is something we have sought for many years,” said Bob Jordan Threshold chief executive.
